PRESIDIO PLAZA: RE-ENERGIZING A LANDMARK: TUCSON, AZ

The concept for the project was developed through the use of kinetic energy. Using kinetic art, interactive floor and wall panels, and interactive fluid tubes. Through the interaction and movement of people and wind, the plaza becomes a place for gathering as well as a place for play and eduction. Building off of an existing fountain, I proposed retrofitting the fountain with mechanical gears that rotate with the energy of wind rather that water; which is a precious resource in an arid environment. Sensacell panels are used to simulate water when interacted with. The panels are activated when walked on or passes a hand over.

The scouring pattern and colored concrete radiate outwards from the plaza into the adjoining streets mimicking the pattern of waters ripple or the pattern of seismic energy. The idea is to stimulate the curiosity of bystanders drawing them into the site. using computer technology and kinetic energy as a way to energize the plaza demonstrates a sustainable interactive method through art and technology.
